Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, November 27 Chapel of the Apparitions Paris, France

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

7:00 Ave Maria

In 1830, St. Catherine Laboure, a novice of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, was called from her bed by a child who led her to the chapel where Mary appeared to her.  In the second, of three, apparitions, Mary appeared standing on a globe, holding another globe in her hand that Mary told her represented the world.  When that globe disappeared, many beautiful rings with precious stones were on her hands with rays of light shining out from them.  She told Catherine that the rays were symbols of the graces she would shed upon those that asked for them.  There was a frame around our Blessed Mother and gold letters that read “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”  A voice then said to Catherine, “Have a medal struck according to this model.  All who wear it will receive great graces especially if they wear it around their neck.”

The back of the image had the letter “M” surmounted by a cross with a crossbar beneath it.  Two hearts were under the “M”, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, encircled with thorns, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, pierced by a sword.  Twelve stars encircled the image.

Catherine’s confessor relayed all that she had told him to the Archbishop, who saw that the medal was made.  Because of its inscription, the medal was originally known as the “Medal of the Immaculate Conception.”   But because of so many conversions and miracles associated with the medal it became known as the “Miraculous Medal.”
