Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, 12 de diciembre La Basílica de Guadalupe, Ciudad de México, México

Our Lady of Guadalupe

El Ave María comienza con las palabras de Lucas 1:28, 42;

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, June 27 Church of St. Alphonsus, Rome, Italy

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

11:00 Gentle Women

Believed to be from the thirteenth of fourteenth century from the island of Crete.  In 1499 it was placed in the Church of St. Mathew on Esquiline Hill in Rome.  The church was destroyed in 1798 under orders from Napoleon.  In 1853, at the request of Pope Pius 1X, the Redemptorist Fathers built a church next to those remains.  A priest learned of the saved image’s whereabouts and asked the Pope to have the painting returned to where it had been for almost 300 years.  Pius recalled having prayed before that very painting as a boy.  The Pope commissioned the Order to preach devotion to Mary under this image.

Our Lady of Fatima, June 13 Basilica of the Rosary Fatima, Portugal

Our Lady of Fatima

10:00 Hail Mary

In 1917 Mary appeared to three young children of Fatima, appearing on the thirteenth of each month from May until October.  Mary told them of three things for the conversion of sinners and peace in the world; to pray daily, especially the rosary and wearing the brown scapular; to make reparations for one’s sins; and, to consecrate the world, especially Russia, to her Immaculate Heart.  Mary said that she would give them a sign at the last apparition.  On that day Mary declared “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”  She told them that many souls would be saved, that Russia would be converted and a period of peace would be given to mankind if her request were followed.  70,000 people from numerous races and creeds witnessed the “Miracle of the Sun.”  The sun was seen to twirl or dance in the sky, then descend to the earth as if it would crash down upon them, before it suddenly returned back to its place in the sky.  No one that stared at the sun for the entire happening had an eye or retina damage.

Three statues have been fashioned after the original, they travel around the world inspiring people and reminding them of Mary’s promises and her “peace plan from heaven.”

Our Lady of Czestochowa, August 26 Church of the Assumption, Czestochowa, Poland

Our Lady of Czestochowa

9:00 Serdeczna Matko

Legend says that this image was painted by St. Luke on a table top that belonged to Mary.  From Jerusalem, St. Helena took the painting to Constantinople where it remained for 500 years, eventually being in the possession of Prince Ladislaus of Poland in the 1400’s.  During an attack on the castle at Belz, an arrow struck the painting in the throat.  To protect it, he was going to move it to the city of Opala.  Stopping in Czestochova for the night, the horses refused to move on the morning of August 26, 1382.

St. Ladislaus had a church and monastery built there for the Pauline Fathers, who have cared for the painting since.  In 1430 the monastery was attacked by the Hussites, who put the painting in a wagon with other stolen items.  The horses refused to move.  When the Hussites learned of this happening before, they threw the painting to the ground.  One of them struck the painting twice with his sword, but on the third attempt, fell to the ground in agony until his death.  All attempts to repair the scars have failed, they always reappear.  The portrait faced numerous other threats, but miracles continued to protect it.

The accounts of many miracles and cures, attributed to this painting of Our Lady, are preserved in the archives of the Pauline Fathers at Jasna Gora.

Coronation of Mary, August 22

Coronation of Mary, August 22

8:00 Our Lady, Queen of Angels

The fifth Glorious Mystery of the rosary crowns Mary as “Queen of Heaven.”  In 1954, Pope Pius XXII officially established the “Queenship of Mary,” not as an empty title or as an honorary distinction, but with its roots in scripture and most especially as Jesus’ mother – a queen by divine relationship.

A Queen Mother is one whose son later becomes king.  Jesus was king at birth.  Mary’s was a divine motherhood because she conceived a king.  It was the Angel Gabriel that told Mary the Lord God would give Jesus the throne of his father, David, and that of his kingdom there would be no end (Lk 1:32-33).

May is the month dedicated to Mary and this is the time when coronation is the traditional form of reverence shown to images of our Blessed Mother.  A crown is a symbol of a queen and of a follower of Christ.  Mary is the perfect follower, worthy of the “crown of glory” that is promised to those who follow Christ (1 Peter 5:4).

St. John saw Mary crowned in Revelations 12:1, “A great sign appeared in the sky, a women clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”
